Richard has enjoyed painting landscapes for many years but it wasn’t until the last few that he put landscape painting on the front burner.
“I have always been an outdoor oriented person, I love the beauty of nature and that is a big reason that I stayed in Colorado. I find certain peacefulness and spirituality in the mountains and woods so it became a natural progression of my work to paint landscapes”
“When I began my career I really felt that landscape paintings had almost been done to death, what could I bring to landscape painting that hasn’t been done before? I have been very fortunate to work closely with the Anschutz Collection of Western Art, in doing so I did a lot of reflecting on my art and how these western masters approached subject matter. I began to realize that their place was as important to them as the people, animals, and things around them. I became inspired by the large formats that the Taos painters were using and many others, I started to paint some larger format landscapes and that was it, I was hooked. I found a real freedom in size and subject. I could be spontaneous and experimental (much like nature itself) and all the while portray the spirit of the place”
Richard has focused mainly on painting the beauty of Colorado, but has included many other places from his travels. Richard’s landscapes have also been very well received by collectors including the Grand Hyatt Hotel in downtown Denver which bought one and commissioned two more.
“I try to convey the place, the mood, the atmosphere, the spiritual ness whether it be shaded, sunny, rainy, rustling or quiet”
