Passion for Art

Richard worked in business for a few years following college, and despite achieving success in his work, he felt unfulfilled. Following the death of his father in 1990, his friend Ramon Kelley encouraged him to quit his job and paint, and that is what he did. Richard studied with Ramon for a few years before he left to find his voice and style. He incorporates the value of the simple beautiful things in life in his paintings. They tend to be bold, energetic, colorful, and positive with an impressionist and representational style.

The Artistic Process: A Journey of Simplicity and Expression

Richard believes that art is a true form of self-expression. “I want everyone who looks at my paintings to know, for a moment, the simple beauty of the simple things in life,” he says. “All too often, people get caught up in details and fail to appreciate the enjoyment of simplicity.

Richard does not attempt to paint photographically; he paints with an impressionistic style that adds mystery and expression to each piece. He relies on the viewer’s ability to piece together the story, leaving some aspects unsaid. Each color, brushstroke, or lack thereof is intentional, conveying emotion and expression. For Richard, the process of creating art is about much more than the finished product—it’s an interaction between the artist and the viewer, inviting deeper reflection and engagement.

Since becoming a full-time impressionist artist in 1994, his work has been included in many juried shows, including the Oil Painters of America and the Pastel Society of America. Also recognized with awards, including the “Pen and Brush” award from the Salmagundi Club in New York. He continues to be represented in solo and group art shows.
